Adele McNeillie and Steve Bluck won the final of the Mixed Competition on 27th September and were presented the Roy Buckley Bowl by Lady Captain Louise Biddlecombe. In addition, the pair (pictured with their Wirral Golf Club partners) enjoyed a great day at Vale Royal Abbey on Sunday 11th October after being entered into the County Mixed Foursomes Championships 2020. They both represented the club well, finishing midtable with 28 points.
Pat Coulburn and Mike Bell won the Anne Wilkinson Trophy on 27th September and were presented with the trophy by John Wilkinson. The members raised over £170 for the North West Lung Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital. Great generosity from the players. Also on the day, Lady Captain Louise Biddlecombe presented Brenda Chadwick with the Lady Captains trophy won earlier in the season.

Tip of the Week Pre-shot Routine Learn how to think, where to think, and how to hit a shot thought-free. The pre-shot routine allows a player to prepare, align and commit. Start by taking a practice swing adjacent to the ball in the direction of the hole. During this practice swing, you can have as many swing thoughts as you like. You then imagine you put the thoughts into a box, lock it and throw away the key!
Then, stand three paces back behind the ball on the extended ball-to-target line. Pick a point in front of the golf ball (this can be a leaf or a blade of grass), walk-in and align your clubface to this focal point. Then get your feet, knees, hips and shoulders parallel to this imaginary line you are drawing from the focal point to the ball and try and hit the ball within 2 seconds of address. This will allow a free-flowing, committed swing with good alignment.
The total pre-shot routine should not take more than 23 seconds!
Give it a try and let me know your results!

Adele McNeillie
Adele was introduced to golf in 2011 when Brenda Chadwick was Lady Captain. She started lessons designed to get women playing golf and as a result of these classes, Adele and a number of ladies became members later that year. She says that she has gradually improved her play over the years albeit very slowly! She has won the President's Prize, Centenary Salver and Mixed Trophies. Her aim is to win a board competition and get her handicap into the teens! Adele has served on the main committee for the last few years working as Membership Director. It has certainly made her appreciate the hard work that all the committee directors do to keep the club working in all areas of management. She hopes to continue to contribute to the growth of the club in the following year and beyond. Adele has been very active in promoting Women into Golf and has organised many taster sessions and lessons for beginners. The club has a new promotion starting, with a large number of women about to begin lessons, which looks very promising. The club has welcomed a number of new women players this year and expanding our women’s section is a very important aspect in the club’s future. |

In these very difficult times, Adele believes that playing golf provides a great way of improving physical and mental health, maintaining social contacts and generally helps our overall well-being. Adele’s career was in the NHS for many years and she, therefore, feels that maintaining health is something we should give time to achieve. Last year Adele organised the charity McMillian 72 Holes in a Day challenge. Four teams took part and due to the generosity of the players, members and friends and family, £9000 was raised. An amazing achievement! It was a memorable day not only for the stamina required but also the battle against the monsoon that prevailed for most of the day! Adele would like to do similar in 2021 (Covid permitting) for the Lady Captain’s charity so she will be on the look-out for volunteers! Adele loves travelling and managed to get back from an 8 week holiday to see family in New Zealand and Australia just before lockdown. Although she says it wouldn’t have been too bad if she had had to stay for a few extra months as the golf over there is super! She also enjoys baking, photography and socialising. Adele takes up the role of Lady Captain next year and is looking forward to being Captain Elect with Louise this year and working with her on lots of fun projects.

Prompt Pace of Play A round of golf is meant to be played at a prompt pace. Each player should recognize that his or her pace of play is likely to affect how long it will take other players to play their rounds, including both those in the player’s own group and those in following groups. Players are encouraged to allow faster groups to play through. Pace of Play Recommendations
The player should play at a prompt pace throughout the round, including the time taken to: Prepare for and make each stroke, move from one place to another between strokes, and move to the next teeing area after completing a hole.
A player should prepare in advance for the next stroke and be ready to play when it is his or her turn.
When it is the player’s turn to play It is recommended that the player make the stroke in no more than 40 seconds after he or she is (or should be) able to play without interference or distraction, and the player should usually be able to play more quickly than that and is encouraged to do so. Playing Out of Turn to Help Pace of Play
Depending on the form of play, there are times when players may play out of turn to help the pace of play: In match play, the players may agree that one of them will play out of turn to save time (see Rule 6.4a). In stroke play, players may play “ready golf” in a safe and responsible way (see Rule 6.4b Exception). Click here for video.

Hatton's happy homecoming Tyrrell Hatton sealed a fantastic victory at Wentworth in the BMW PGA Championship over the weekend. The Englishman played some outstanding golf from tee-to-green, setting up birdie chances aplenty thanks to a near-perfect ball-striking display. Finding the right part of the green was key to Hatton's success over the weekend, which saw him enter the World's Top 10 for the very first time. One of the slightly more unusual talking points from the weekend was Hatton's clothing; more specifically his hoodies. It seems to have people split and, whilst it won't be to everyone's taste, we'd love to hear your thoughts - send us a message below. |
