El Rompido Coaching Trips

Tip of the Week

Take strokes off your round by practising the three putting drills below.

1) Short putt - Place 5 balls around the hole at approx 2-foot radius. Start by setting yourself a goal of holing 10 out of 10 putts. If you miss one, start again until you have achieved your goal. Little Tip: Try and keep your head down through impact and follow through until you hear the ball hitting the bottom of the hole.

2) Scoring range putt - Set up 5 balls approx 15 feet away. Place the golf club approx 2 feet behind the hole then the objective is to get all 5 balls either in the hole or past the hole not touching the golf club. Set a goal of 5 out of 5 to start. This drill makes a player more positive in the scoring range. Remember, you are not expected to hole out from this range but it's nice to make one or two a round.

3) Long putt - Again, set up 5 balls and putt to a hole that is 30 feet or further. The objective is to putt all 5 balls into a 2 foot radius you practised in drill 1. The second objective is to 2 putt each time. Remember: drive for show, putt for dough!

Rule of the Week

Wiping away sand on the fringe

Sand and loose soil are only classed as loose impediments on the green. This means that if you’re on the green wanting to putt and there is sand from a previously played bunker shot on your line, both on the green and on the fringe, you may wipe the sand or loose soil away on the green but may not touch any that is lying on the fringe (unless that sand arrived there after your ball came to rest – e.g from another player’s bunker shot after your ball had landed). This is one of those rules golfers break without realising – Rory got penalised for brushing sand from the fringe a few years ago in Abu Dhabi.

Rule 8.1a – improving conditions affecting stroke (line of play). General penalty.

English top in Hawaii

Tour golf is very much a way of life and an unforgiving one at that. As recently as 2019, Harris English was struggling to return to the PGA Tour, having lost his card and been demoted to the Korn Ferry Tour (this is the feeder tour to the PGA, much like the Challenge Tour in Europe).

Now, English is a PGA Tour champion once again. The 31-year-old picked up his first victory since 2013 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, having fought off Justin Thomas’ pursuit of a third title in five years at the event. What an achievement, and one for the sentimentalists.
