A new face in the Pro Shop!

We are delighted to announce that we'll be able to welcome you back to the Pro Shop very soon and that a new member of staff will be joining us when golf resumes again.

Steffan Sullivan will be joining the Pro Shop team and is looking forward to meeting you all; please pop in and say hi and introduce yourself to him when the shop reopens.

"I started playing golf at age 14 which gave me a different focus from football and I loved it.

I was playing off single figures by age 16 and hooked on the game. I was asked to be Junior Captain at Davenport Golf Club at age 18 which gave me lots of great experience.

I played for the University of Central Lancashire Golf team whilst studying Golf Performance which is where I got my first taste of coaching.

I currently play in the Derbyshire and Cheshire League and for the Davenport scratch team.

I have played Golf in the USA and Europe including England, Wales, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy and also California and Arizona which was my favourite place.

My favourite Golfer is Tiger Woods. It's a cliche I know, but he transcended the sport to what it is today; I don’t think anyone will ever dominate the game of golf like that again.

My aspirations are to do my PGA qualification, become a golf professional in the next few years and to be playing the best golf that I can. My current handicap is 2.3.

In competitions I have had a few 68’s at Davenport and a 2 under par at Hazel Grove. My lowest score in a non-medal round is 6 under par.

My favourite colour is red and my favourite food has got to be steak and chips with peppercorn sauce.

I enjoy watching football and support Man United. I like keeping fit and listening to live music. I have missed golf during the lockdown and I can’t wait to be back playing again soon and dust off some of the cobwebs!

I am really looking forward to my new role at Didsbury Golf Club and meeting everyone."

Player Profile

An inspiration

My long-term pupil, Stuart Earnshaw, who is 86 years old, is proof that age is only a number. Stuart often hits drives over 200 yards! He is a regular pupil and has been fantastic company on my golf coaching trips to Spain. I hope this gives everybody some inspiration:

“I was lucky. My father, who taught himself from books, introduced me to pitch and putt when I was 12. I played at Platt Fields and Wythenshawe until he took me to Heaton Park Golf Course when I was 16. He and I played there most Sunday mornings. In my late teens, I joined Disley Golf Club and played there once a week until I managed to break 100 for the first time, the week before I got married.

Dad and I found Heaton Moor more accessible than Heaton Park and started to play there every Saturday morning for a green fee of half a crown (12.5p)! The fee was paid to the pro in a small wooden hut beside the clubhouse. Pro Charles Chevalier was then the holder in the Guinness Book of Records for holes in one - now commemorated in a glass panel in the entrance.

A few years later, I joined Heaton Moor and got my first handicap of 16. I stayed at Heaton Moor for around 50 years, getting my name on 2 boards.

I subsequently joined Sale Golf Club and have been there since. In 2010 I won the Captain's prize and had my handicap cut from 18 to 13. From then on I have played every Saturday in what I call ‘the point 1 club’. The following year I had both knee joints fully replaced and my handicap climbed inexorably up to 27 at the end of last year. Surprisingly my new WHS handicap is 22 but James will soon have me playing to that on the way to my remaining ambition to play a round in under my age.

Whilst at Sale I played in a Pro-Am at Hillside with Malcolm Gregson and also at Wentworth with Bernard Gallagher the year he was Ryder Cup Captain.

The last two seasons I have played in matches on the Seniors team which has been great fun and allowed me the opportunity to play other courses in the area.

Recently lessons with James have been the highlight but roll on real golf again!

Max enjoyment at Riviera

With Fitzpatrick and DJ both in Sunday's final group within touching distance of leader Burns, you could be forgiven to assume the winner is nailed-on to be from that stellar three-ball.

Well, it was a close contest with a two-hole playoff needed to decide the eventual champion; however, none of these players took part. Instead, Max Homa - who missed a three-footer to win on his 72nd hole - battled Tony Finau at Riviera Country Club, with Homa coming out on top.
