Two majors in two weeks - we really have been spoilt! Can we do it all over again? The golf from Augusta National was fantastic and has made us want to get out on the course at every opportunity. Don't forget, the pro shop is now back open so please drop by the next time you're at the club. We have a brilliant range of new products available for 2021!

Club News

Bar & Catering Now Open!

We're delighted to say that the bar has now reopened and that catering is available again.

The bar will be serving a range of draft beers as well as a great selection of bottled beers and ciders. A lovely selection of breakfast barms, toasties, freshly made sandwiches and burgers.

An order and collection point has been set up in the foyer by the main entrance to the clubhouse and your membership card will be required to complete your order.

We have increased our outdoor seating capacity with a lovely new patio area at the back of the clubhouse and there is a small marquee set up on the patio area at the front of the clubhouse by the 1st tee to provide some additional shelter.

US Masters Sweepstake

Congratulations to Andy Turner who drew Hideki Matsuyama to win a fitted TaylorMade SIM2 Max driver.

By complete fluke, Andy drew both 1st and 2nd place Masters winners and at one point in the competition had 1st, 2nd and 3rd place players!

Coaching Success

Peter Robinson

Peter has won his first competition of the year at Holdsworth Golf Club with a score of 38 points.

Peter has recently recovered from major knee surgery and James has been helping him with his rehabilitation.

James works with lots of players who are coming back from injury and James' methods also provide injury prevention.

Christine Evans

James is immensely proud of Christine, who is new to the game and has been dedicating her time to the game which has already started to pay off.

Christine finished 2nd in her first competition at Flixton Golf Club.

Jane Ridley

James' client, Didsbury member, Jane Ridley ) has had a great start to the season: she won the first ladies competition with 33 points on Tuesday and played very well in the team away match against Ringway on Monday too, coming second.

James is looking forward to seeing her progress in the near future after some lessons on bunkers!

Player Profile

Andy Turner

"I took up golf at the age of 16 and by my early 20’s I was playing off 18. Then family came along and golf took a backseat for over 15 years.

After taking the game up socially again in my 30’s I joined a couple of societies before becoming a full member at Portal Golf Club in Tarporley in 2013. I spent a great 4 years at the club where the highlights were winning a major, winning the winter league and winning the club singles knockouts (all while my handicap was reducing from the initial 26 I was given to a much more respectable 15). I was a regular member of the inter pub match team and also served as communications officer on the committee for 12 months before work and family took me to Sale where I currently live with my partner and 20-month old daughter. I also have 2 grown-up kids age 27 and 19 and last year my eldest had a little boy so I added Grandad to the list of names people call me!

After a brief spell at Altrincham and an ongoing associate membership at Reddish Vale I joined Didsbury in June 2020 after being welcomed many times as a visitor by the club and its members. I love the Didsbury course and the members I have met and played with have all been fantastic. Since joining my handicap has come down from 14 to 12 thanks to a good season in 2020, the highlight being 2nd place on my first Didsbury Captains Day. My best round last season was a 77 gross but unfortunately not in a competition.

Outside of club golf, I try to play in knockouts and open competitions in the North West and North Wales. I got to the regional pool final of the Titleist FootJoy masters last year before losing to one of James’ pupils at Ellesmere (thanks James!).

I currently work as a Regional Manager for a home food delivery company but I am moving to a new company in July which is next door to a driving range and course in Northwich so hopefully, that will allow me to practice a little more.

Outside of work and everything else going on I have competed in triathlons and various running events and completed my first marathon in Manchester in 2018 where I hobbled over the line after injuring myself 5 miles before the end.

Interesting fact - in my late teens and early 20’s I was a member of a singing cabaret act and used to perform at holiday camps and functions along the East Coast of England.

My favourite played courses in the UK are Southport and Ainsdale and abroad:
Mexico, Gran Coyote Golf near Cancun or Royal Golf Marrakech in Morocco.

My bucket list courses would have to be Marina Bay Singapore (under floodlights) and Scottsdale just to play the stadium.

I am looking forward to a great season of golf at Didsbury this year and look forward to meeting more of you on the course and in the clubhouse."

Golf on Tour

A new winner at Augusta

The Masters has a long, rich tradition of making history, and that was only furthered by Hideki Matsuyama becoming the first Japanese golfer to win a Major, finishing Sunday draped in a Green Jacket. A momentous achievement for the golfer and his home nation.

The list of big names to miss the +3 cut, including reigning champ Dustin Johnson and Grand Slam-chasing Rory McIlroy, tells you just how brutal Augusta National played over the first few days. Matsuyama found that brutality at the worst time, watching his lead cut from six with seven to play to a one-shot, nervy victory down the stretch. But he made it, and now his name is etched into the history books.

Beyond the blade

It’s pretty hard to miss the difference between modern-day mallets and traditional blades, but there are aspects of both putter styles that are much less obvious but still really set them apart from models of the past.
